Shree Shantadurga Temple, North Goa

Shri Shantadurga is Temple (Mandir) a very popular pilgrimage place which is situated at Kavalem village, north Goa (Ponda taluka). This temple was started to build in 1730 and was completed in 1738. Devotees it renovated in 1966 when Goa free from Portuguese colony rule. This temple was dedicated to goddess Shantadurga. According the local people legends when Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva fought against then Shantadurga (Goddess Parvati) play a role of the mediates and stopped fight. Goddess Shantadurga idols stand between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu. This original temple was located at Quelossim but destroyed by Portuguese ruler in 1564. Devotees it moved to Kavalem village. Present temple was built in 1739.

Shri santadurga Temple at Goa is dedicated to Lord Durga and is believed to be a mediated between Shree Vishnu and Shree Shiva with the firece war which was going in between them was almost bringing the creation to an end. It is said that the truce was bought upon by Shri Santadurga Temple and with the Shri Santadurga who is said to be flanked by Vishnu and Shiva on both sides it is one of the most famous avatar of the recent times. The avatar of the Shree Jagdamba Devi who is the incarnation of Durga and has come to make peace or the shanti between the two lords helped the creation to flourish further. If the original site of the Durga is said to be believed then Kardelivana of Quelossim in Mormugao Taluka which is of the Great Poet Krishnadas Sharma who penned down the lyrics of the epic Shri Krishna Charita is said to be during the 14th Century on the lines of Dnyaneshwari. The temple which currently houses the built during between 1713 A.D. and 1738 A.D. also has many renovations done at the temple over the years to preserve it qnd helps accommodating the growing needs of the pilgrims.
