Reis Magos Fort, North Goa

Reis Magos Fort is one of the sturdy forts which is built by the laterite walls and is studded with typically Portuguese turrets and the Fort got erected in 1551 along with protecting the Mandovi estuary. The fort was formerly an accommodation of Viceroys along with other dignitaries and they use to newly arrive from and also the early eighteenth century got the new wars against the new Maratha who were never able to get into the fort. Now, some parts of the Fort operate as a prison and is opened to the public. The Reis Magos Fort is situated on the right bank of the Mandovi and the Fort was enlarged on different occasions. The Fort is preserved well and is standing on eminence which commands a splendid view all around. The Fort is said to be located at a village of Goa called the Reis Magos and is surrounded by the remains of Dom Luis de Araide with the walls studded by typically Portuguese Turrets and it helps to pour the hot oil on the attackers. If you go by your own vehicle then you have to get into 500-600 meters odd trek to reach the fort entrance and also one has to buy a ticket to enter the fort.

Reis Magos is coastal village in north Goa (Bardez taluka). This village is just 8 kilometers far from Goa state capital Panjim. This village also has Reis Magos Fort which was built in 1551 by Portuguese. It was again re-erected in 1707. Now it good condition and also used as prison till 1993. Now, it opens to visit general public without any fee. This fort also has 33 guns which were used in ancient age to protect it from invaders.
