Museum of Christian Art, Velha Goa

Museum of Christian Art was started from 1994 which is situated at old Goa city. It is only one museum of the Christian art related. It is exist in Convent of Santa Monica which set up with financial and technical by National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), New Delhi Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, Portugal. It has several objects to exhibits like Metals, Sculptures, Precious Metals, Furniture, Textiles, Ivory and Textiles.

Museum of Christian Art is one of the former colonial capital of the Old Goa and as it name suggests it holds only exhibits out of Christianity and its roots giving the religion a better foothold among the people. It is located in the former colonial capital of the Old Goa with statuary along with the paintings and sculptures. The museum is found at the convent of Santa Monica in Old Goa with projecting Archdiocese of Goa and serving the financial assistance from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation with Portugal and the Indian National Trust of Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH), New Delhi.

The Seminary of Rachol, Salcete, Goa and within the Convent of St. Monica with the excellent Museum of Christian Art contains statuary, sculptures, paintings and religious silverware which dates back to the 16th Century. It is also noteworthy that the convent was the first nunnery of its kind in the Eastern countries and continued till 19th Century. The museum is a project of the Archdocese Of Goa and was set up with the technical along with the financial assistance from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. The good thing is that the technical and financial assistance from Portugal as well as Indian National Trust for Art & Cultural Heritage and it got housed in part of the 1627 Convent of St. Monica with collection of paintings, statues and sculptures.

The museum is closed “As of now” and the refurbishment but will open in 2020 and till then one could see the various religious scripts and the other details over the Youtube channel or the official website with the link https://www.museumofchristianart.com/ but sadly a major heist occurred in January 2012 with no detailed listing of items that got stolen in the case with much of the sculptures and furniture getting misplaced.
