Dr. Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, North Goa

Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary is located on Chorao Island which is along with of the Mandovi River. Sanctuary spread in 440 acres area. Different types of birds species are available here like reef heron, striated, black bittem, jack snipe, red knot etc.

Salim Ali Bird sanctuary is a mangrove habitat with location along the Mandovi River at Goa and it is named after Salim Ali who is the eminent Indian Ornithologist. The sanctuary and islands are accessed by a ferry service which runs daily between mangroves such as Ribander and Chorao along with Rhizophora Mucronata. The size of the sanctuary is said to be 178 Hectares which could be 440 acres. The area is said to be covered by low mangrove forest and the several species of birds which gets recorded along with the common species which includes the striated heron and western reef heron. Other species which are said to be recorded around the common species include the little bittern, black bittern and red knot along with jack snipe and pied avocet. The sanctuary is also said to be the host to various other species such as mudskipers alongw ith fiddler crabs and other mangrove habitat specialists making it a place to be having a large number of visitors. The name also remains to be very positive as the Dr. Salim Ali was an avid bird watcher and the person in him use to spend hours in watching the birds and getting details of the species and he has been an author for several books on birds and other species.
