Chapora Fort

Chapora Fort is located in Bardez, Goa with the background of the Chapora River. The arrival of Portuguese in 1510 and with that the Portuguese acquired Bardez. The Portuguese recovered from the encounter with Marathas and it strengthened with the building of Chapora fort in 1717 and it replaced the older fortifications. With, Goa borders moving towards the end of century the fort stands tall and it offers fantastic views across the Chapora River which connects with Arabian Sea in the west. The moats are built around the forts and it is said that fort has military significance but it lost its importance by the end of the century.

The fort has a church which is dedicated to St. Anthony and it has disappeared now with the few signs which exists of the barracks and now it has only few signs of the housing which it earlier provides with the wide expanse of open space with only a tumble of stones and few cashew bushes with few herds of goats which graze there and with that the best thing is its placement where the fort sits on a prominent position with steep slopes on all sides but still is a pleasant place to wander with the fort also a place of shooting for the movie “Dil Chahta Hai”.

Chapora Fort is placed in Bardez taluka, north Goa district. This is located at mouth of the Chapora River where it dropped into Arabean Sea. It had an old other fort in place of the current fort before of the 1510 when Portuguese were come. Current fort was built by Hindu religion King of Sawantwadi in 1717 but Portuguese ruler defeated chapora ruler and got this fort. They used several cannon to protect fort. This fort also has a small size church which is dedicated to St. Anthony.
