Banana which can be termed as the staple food for many in India as most of the time people try to get it into their diet during their years of growth or lets say the sports personality and the most important of the lot which is the common man like to have The Banana in their food. With much of the fruit which a person takes is in terms of fruit intake people also love to experiment with it. As the banana could be taken raw in the form of vegetables or also if the various products such as with custard, corn flakes and chips make it the most sought after fruits in India.

Goa has one of the most important food culture where fruits and fish are an important aspects of life with Banana crop getting it is cultivated in a total area of 2,342 hectares with total production of 23, 420 tonnes per year. The banana which is cultivated in the well suited environment as the weather it is humid along with the tropical high rainfall zone. The high density banana planting helps in maintaining the fertigation system which realizes higher profit. With a great way in terms of water, weed management the agriculturist in Goa helps to get the higher bunch weight.

The Goa banana cultivation started as an experiment by 90 farmers from Valpoi and Bicholim talukas who got motivated and after which the banana production saw a major success in terms of per hectare yield along with being a good cash crop with great returns. In this way, the experiment did not went futile and the value of Banana in human nutrition got explained thus making it a part of Goanese culture. The latest methods to participate in modern methods to cultivate and adapt the methods to increase productivity has shot up the commercial cultivation to encourage commercial cultivation through local varieties of banana.

The Ampti (Mysore), Raspali (Silk). Velchi (Ney poovan), Saldatti (Saba), Savarboni (Bluggoe) Myndoli (Horn Plantain) and Sugandhi (Pisang awak) are the main banana cultivars or the species of banana cultivated in Goa. Some other varieties are Cavendish varieties like Grand Naine along with Dwarf Cavendish and Robusta which makes the banana cultivated as a part of mixed cultivation these days.

Thus, the important aspect of food culture all across India and many other parts of the world has made it to be economically viable for the selling of banana in terms of exports and thus make it the major cash crop of Goa.

Cultivation Locations: Bardez, Bicholim, Pernem, Ponda, Sattari, Tiswadi, Dharbandora, Canacona, Mormugao, Salcette, Sanguem and Quepem.
