Archaeological Museum and Portrait Gallery, Old Goa

Archaeological and Portrait Gallery Museum was established in 1964 and currently it run by Archaeological Survey of India department. It is situated in St. Francis of Assisi church on convent section, old Goa city. This museum has total eight galleries to display to tourist which are related to Goa Portuguese ruler period, early period and medieval period. Generally this museum has sculptures, weapons of the Portuguese rule period, stamps, coins and statue of the epic poet. Church of St. Francis of Assisi was built in 1661 by Portuguese ruler it is a Roman Catholic style church which also has two statures st. paul and St peter.

The Archaeological Museum, Goa which is located at the back of Church of the St. Francis of Assisi with the museum and contains many of the beautiful artefacts from the Portuguese rule in India. Some of the portraits which are said to be from the time of Viceroys and Governors of Goa explains the historical importance which is portrayed through the paintings. The collection of stamps along with religious artefacts and many other such treasures makes it a must visit place. The extensive collection of the wooden sculptures along with pillars and hero stones with Persian and Arabic inscriptions along with Portuguese weapons makes the archaeological museum Goa become the cynosure of all eyes.
